Vanagon Subaru SVX conversion 2015

Today begins the first post for our latest vanagon restoration. Although we don’t have the syncro here we do have the donor Subaru SVX.
We are fast forwarding a bit as we have already removed the engine and harness.
Joe has begun the engine cleaning and teardown. Here is the engine with the cylinder heads off. After some cleaning.

The engine is pretty dirty.

The cylinder heads are in good shape

There is a bit of sludge build up but it’s not that bad for its age. There is a good bit of corrosion around the head gaskets. We won’t be able to see how bad it is until they are cleaned up..

The bottom end looks pretty good too.
So, now it’s off to the machine shop for more cleaning and mild machining.

IMG_1909-0.JPG Joe has found there will also need be some work to be done on the old wiring harness for the engine, it’s not terrible but it does need to be reloomed a bit. There were a few brittle plastic fittings on the egr system that broke during disassembly. There is also a good but of sludge build up form old coolant that will need to be delt with. This thing is going to be nice when its back on the road pushing the Syncro.

Now begins the tear down and rust repair                             With the fuel tank and suspension removed and completely torn down everything will b restored or replaced. Some of the suspension components will be replaced with Burleymotorsports products, including the upper control arms and rear control arms. She is rusty, soon things will begin to look much better.
